A tragic incident occurred during a raid on a notorious drug joint in Delta State, Nigeria, resulting in the death of a 2-year-old baby named Ivan Onose Omhonrina.
The baby's younger brother, Eromonsele, also sustained an injury in the incident, which took place on Thursday, July 13, 2023, according to Daily Trust.
Eyewitnesses reported that the children were present at their mother's shop after school hours when stray bullets hit them during the raid conducted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.
Eromonsele was brushed by a stray bullet on the eye, while Ivan was hit in the abdomen.
The victims were immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) for surgery, but unfortunately, Ivan did not survive.
The Delta State Commandant of the NDLEA, Mr. John Tunde, confirmed the incident but denied that his men intentionally opened fire on the children.
According to Tunde, while the operatives were surrounding the drug joint, a Toyota Camry car parked nearby attempted to escape and ran over one of their men.
In an attempt to stop the car, shots were fired by the operatives, but it remains unclear if the children were inside the car at the time of the shooting.
Tunde emphasized that his men did not open fire at any shop and stated that the injured NDLEA officer is currently receiving treatment at the Central Hospital in Ogwashi-Uku.
The incident is being thoroughly investigated, and activist Comrade Isreal Joe confirmed that a successful operation was performed on the injured sibling.
