The man accused of killing four people in a Henry County neighborhood on Saturday has met his demise.
Henry County Sheriff Reginald Scandrett confirmed that Andre Longmore, 40, was fatally wounded during a shootout with deputies and police officers on Sunday afternoon.
In the exchange of gunfire, a Henry County deputy and two Clayton County police officers sustained injuries. The deputy, who was shot in the back, was transported by Life Flight to Grady Memorial Hospital, while one of the police officers was taken to Grady via ambulance, and the other received on-scene treatment.
Law enforcement had been actively searching for Longmore after he allegedly opened fire on residents in the Dogwood Lakes subdivision of Hampton, resulting in the deaths of three men and a woman on Saturday.
Hampton Police Chief James Turner, during a news conference on Sunday, identified the victims as Scott Leavitt, 67; Shirley Leavitt, 66; Steve Blizzard, 65; and Ronald Jeffers, 66.
Sheriff Scandrett, speaking at the same news conference, declared, "The monster is dead. The citizens of Hampton, Henry County, the metro Atlanta area, and the entire state of Georgia can now breathe a little easier tonight. The suspect is off the street."
Clayton County police were alerted to Longmore's presence at an apartment building on Wagon Wheel Court in Jonesboro after a Henry County deputy made contact with the vehicle Longmore had been last seen in.
Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel engaged with Longmore inside one of the apartments, where he proceeded to open fire at them. Sheriff Scandrett provided details, stating, "We pursued him, confronted the suspect again, and he once more brandished a handgun. Gunfire was exchanged, and the suspect was incapacitated."
The incident marks the conclusion of a tragic series of events, bringing some closure to the Henry County community. The investigation into the shooting and the events leading up to it continues.
