In the latest development surrounding the alleged Long Island serial killer, Rex Heuermann, his wife, Asa Ellerup, has reportedly filed for divorce.
The 59-year-old architect faces murder charges in connection with the Gilgo Beach murders, a long-unsolved series of killings that have haunted the area.
Heuermann is accused of murdering Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, and is also considered a prime suspect in another killing. Authorities are closely monitoring the case, which has garnered significant attention.
Asa Ellerup, the wife of the accused, made her move to end the marriage amidst the ongoing charges, according to information shared by Daily Beast writer Pilar Melendez on Twitter. The divorce, filed in Suffolk County Supreme Court, is reported to be uncontested.

Prior to Rex's arrest, Asa lived with him in their Massapequa Park home.
She had attended Farmingdale High School and worked at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
During Rex Heuermann's court appearance on July 14, 2023, where he pleaded not guilty to the murder charges, Asa stood by his side in the courtroom.
Heuermann's arrest came after detectives allegedly linked him to a pickup truck seen near the scene of one of the victim's disappearance in 2010.
Detectives later found Heuermann's DNA on a discarded pizza crust in Manhattan, which was matched to genetic material found with the victims' bodies.
Heuermann's lawyer, Michael Brown, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf at the arraignment in Riverhead State Court, where Judge Richard Ambro ordered him jailed without bail due to the seriousness of the charges.
Authorities are closely monitoring the case, as Heuermann is a suspect in several other killings, including that of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Leading up to his arrest, Heuermann reportedly searched obsessively on the internet for information about the Gilgo Beach killings and the victims, as well as podcasts and documentaries about the case, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney.
As the case unfolds, more details may emerge, shedding light on the unsettling story of the alleged Long Island serial killer and the divorce proceedings initiated by his wife, Asa Ellerup.
