Dismissal And Arraignment of Inspector in Lagos Shooting Brings Hope for Accountability

The incident involving the fatal shooting of generator technician Bakare Idris in Lagos State has resulted in the dismissal of Inspector Kabiru Odeyemi from the Lagos State Police Command.

The tragic event took place in May 2023 when Idris was returning home from an outing in the Oregun area of the state. Following an autopsy, Idris was laid to rest in Ifo area of Ogun State.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the command, confirmed the inspector's dismissal through a tweet on July 5, stating that it paves the way for his arraignment, scheduled for July 7, 2023.
CP Idowu Owohunwa, the Commissioner of Police, expressed his commitment to upholding the rule of law, civility, and respect for human life in Lagos State.

Meanwhile, the deceased's brother revealed that the police officer who shot Idris was off-duty at the time, recounting the officer's frequent harassment and intimidation of people in the area.

According to the brother, Idris was shot twice, the second time fatally, as he was about to enter his house.

They rushed him to a hospital but the officer came, threatened everyone with a gun, then took Idris in his bus and drove away.

He later claimed that he had transported him to a distant emergency center where he passed away.
