Elderly Man Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Wife's Tragic Death

In a tragic incident, a 79-year-old man is facing a murder charge after authorities allege he attacked his 77-year-old wife, Jean Harriette Mart.

Paul Edward Mart reportedly bashed her head into the granite floor, leading to her death.

The medical examiner revealed she suffered from a gunshot wound to the head and blunt force injuries.

The arrest came after a tense standoff at their home in the Big Pine Lake area, east of Perham, Minnesota.

Police were called after a dead woman was found, prompting evacuation and a response from multiple police agencies, including a SWAT team.

During the standoff, the suspect allegedly made comments admitting to the incident and even threatened "suicide by cop."

He was eventually taken into custody, and a gun was found nearby.

Mart's lawyer claims the incident was an accident and that there is no evidence linking his client to the gun.

The case is set to proceed, and the elderly man's next court date is scheduled for August 2nd.

The community is left in shock and sorrow over this heartbreaking tragedy.
