A tragic incident occurred in Edo State on Saturday, July 22, 2023, when suspected kidnappers opened fire on a car traveling along the Igarra-Ebilo road in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
The victim, a young man named Emmanuel Rufus, fondly known as EmmyRuff, was in a Mercedes Benz GLK with two relatives when the gunmen emerged from the bush and attacked.
In the attack, Emmanuel Rufus lost his life, and the other occupants of the vehicle were abducted and taken into the nearby bush.
The State Police Command spokesperson confirmed the killing, though authorities are still investigating the case.
The incident has raised concerns in the community, with a group called the Okpameri Descendants Union condemning the increased attacks by suspected kidnappers and bandits posing as herdsmen in the area.
They urged the government and security agencies to focus on the Fulani camp around the Uneme-Ayetoro area, where criminal activities seem to be taking place regularly.
The community also praised the synergy among security operatives in Akoko-Edo, including vigilantes and hunters, but called for an overhaul of strategies to secure all flashpoints in the local government, especially ahead of the Igarra Aba Day in August, a significant indigenous festival in West Africa.
