A man who is currently serving time in a Florida prison has been moved to an Alabama jail after allegedly confessing to a double murder that occurred in 2002.
The victims of the heinous crime were Monica Rollins, 23, and her 6-year-old son, Dalton, who were discovered stabbed to death in their home in Heflin, Alabama.
Monica, who was eight months pregnant at the time, tragically went into early labor and lost her third son as a result.
The Victims
The case had gone cold for over two decades until investigators, aided by the state and grant money from Seasons of Justice, managed to gather an extensive amount of evidence.
With meticulous effort and months of work, Investigator and Captain Scott Bonner faced the daunting task of sifting through a vast collection of reports to pursue leads.
Lewis Ladon Spivey, now 39 years old, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder. He was only 18 at the time of the alleged killings and had a previous connection to the victims.
Currently serving a prison sentence in Florida for an unrelated robbery and aggravated assault case, Spivey became a person of interest early on in the investigation.
Lewis Ladon Spivey (Suspect)
During questioning, Spivey reportedly provided a detailed confession, taking sole responsibility for the murders.
The Alabama Department of Forensics analyzed DNA, fingerprints, and fibers collected from the crime scene, further supporting the investigation.
This case became personal for Investigator Bonner, who has dedicated countless hours to connecting with Monica and Dalton's grieving families over the past three years.
He expressed satisfaction in being able to provide them with some sense of peace.
Spivey is now held at the Cleburne County jail without bond, following a judge's denial.
The transfer from a Florida prison to an Alabama jail marks a significant development in this long-standing cold case.
