In a chilling case that shook everyone, a 40-year-old man is facing charges for allegedly killing his girlfriend, a mother of three. The dismembered remains of Manijeh "Mani" Starren, 34, were discovered wrapped in plastic bags and inside a cooler, at a storage unit in Minnesota several months after her disappearance.
The accused, Joseph S. Jorgenson, has been charged with second-degree murder and could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
Joseph S. Jorgenson - The Accused
The details of the case, outlined in a probable cause affidavit, paint a disturbing picture. Starren's father reported her missing to the Saint Paul Police Department on May 1, as he had not heard from her since April 21.
He revealed that she had been struggling with drug addiction and mental health issues and was supposed to enter a drug treatment center but never showed up. According to court documents, she expressed fear and paranoia towards her boyfriend, known as Joe, who had previously wrapped a rope around her neck during a violent altercation.
Investigations at Starren's apartment uncovered evidence of a violent incident, with signs of a serious injury or killing and attempts to clean up blood. Large amounts of blood were found in the living room, kitchen, and on the couch, while the apartment showed signs of forced entry and property damage.
Manijeh "Mani" Starren ( Victim)
Surveillance footage captured Jorgenson with Starren outside her apartment on April 21, where he was seen chasing and pushing her back inside before she disappeared. Shockingly, Jorgenson failed to report her missing and continued with his life as if nothing had happened.
Further examination of Jorgenson's actions revealed disturbing messages on his Facebook page, where he allegedly threatened Starren's life and expressed violent sentiments towards her. When authorities raided his apartment, Jorgenson resisted arrest, starting a fire and engaging in a physical altercation with officers. He now faces additional charges of arson, threats of violence, and disarming an officer.
During the search, police discovered another woman in Jorgenson's apartment with visible injuries, claiming that he had choked and threatened to kill her. The apartment emitted a foul odor, and a large pool of blood was found in the front closet, indicating a possible crime scene.
The investigation led authorities to a storage facility where they encountered a strong smell of decomposing flesh. Inside a green tote, a large cooler, a blue duffle bag, and a small carry-on suitcase were found. X-ray examination revealed human remains, including a torso, limbs, and a head, meticulously wrapped in multiple layers of saran wrap and bags.
The medical examiner had to rely on tattoos and dental records to confirm Starren's identity due to the extent of the dismemberment. As the community grapples with this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been created to support Starren's funeral expenses, highlighting the devastating impact her loss has had on her three children.
Fanta Xayavong (Second Potential Victim)
In a concerning development, authorities announced during a news conference that they are investigating Jorgenson's possible involvement in the disappearance of another woman, Fanta Xayavong, last seen with the suspect in July 2021. The safety of Xayavong is now a major concern for law enforcement.
Jorgenson's next court appearance is scheduled for August 21 as the investigation into these heinous crimes continues.
