In Indiana, a terrible incident involving a 1-year-old boy being shot and killed by his 5-year-old brother has led to the arrest of their parents.
The heartbreaking event occurred in their Lafayette apartment, located about 60 miles from Indianapolis.
Deonta Jermaine Johnson, 27, and Shatia Tiara Welch, 24, have been charged with several offenses related to the tragic death of their son, Isiah Johnson.
The charges include neglect of a dependent resulting in death, neglect resulting in endangerment, neglect resulting in bodily injury, drug-related offenses, and more.
The tragedy unfolded when the older brother found a gun inside the apartment and accidentally shot his younger sibling in the head.
The 16-month-old toddler lost his life due to the gunshot wound, and toxicology results revealed he had tested positive for marijuana. Shockingly, his older brother allegedly had cocaine in his system.
The parents were arrested after a traffic stop, according to the Lafayette Police Department. Johnson initially denied the shooting and having a gun in the apartment, but later admitted that Welch had a gun in her possession.
The gun was found by the police during a search of the apartment, along with various drugs.
Surveillance footage from the apartment complex also revealed Johnson leaving and placing a bag in a car after his son's death. Marijuana was reportedly discovered in the car during a subsequent search.
Both parents appeared in court, and their trials are scheduled for later this year. It is a tragic and devastating case that has left the family and the community in grief.
