Rapper G Herbo, also known as Herbert Wright III, recently admitted to playing a part in a scheme that used stolen credit card information for a luxurious lifestyle.
He confessed to the federal court about conspiring to commit wire fraud and making false statements. The deal with prosecutors saved him from facing several counts of aggravated identity theft.
As part of the agreement, G Herbo agreed to give up nearly $140,000, which he gained from a $1.5 million scheme involving multiple people.
The scheme went on from March 2017 to November 2018, during which G Herbo and his promoter, Antonio Strong, shared stolen account information from dark websites through texts, social media, and emails.
They used the stolen money to fund extravagant trips and boost the rapper's career by flaunting private jet rides, luxury cars, and stays at a luxurious villa in Jamaica.
In one instance, they even used stolen account info to charter a jet from Chicago to Austin, Texas, for G Herbo and his entourage.
Another time, they spent nearly $15,000 on a Jamaican villa stay for G Herbo and seven others. The ill-gotten gains were also used to order two designer puppies using a fake driver's license and stolen credit card.
The transactions went through smoothly because the stolen credit card info was genuine, and it wasn't until later that the actual cardholders noticed and reported the fraud.
Now, G Herbo faces up to 25 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for November 7.
Despite his legal troubles, G Herbo's music has garnered attention, and he has released successful albums like "Humble Beast" and "Survivor's Remorse."
He has also initiated a program called Swervin' Through Stress in Chicago to help urban youths dealing with mental health crises, sharing his own struggle with PTSD.
His journey from humble beginnings to fame and then fraud has left many shocked and disappointed.
