Shocking and disturbing details have emerged regarding the alleged kidnapping and brutal murder of a 2-year-old girl in Michigan. Recently released court records shed light on the tragic incident, revealing the horrifying actions of Rashad Maleek Trice, 26.
Trice has been charged by the U.S. Department of Justice with kidnapping a minor and kidnapping resulting in death. According to investigators, Trice stabbed and sexually assaulted Wynter Cole-Smith's mother before kidnapping the toddler from her mother's apartment in Lansing.
He then fled with Wynter in a stolen vehicle to St. Claire Shores, where he was pursued by the police. In an attempt to evade capture, Trice crashed into a police vehicle.
Although Wynter and Trice were not found at the crash scene, a significant amount of blood was discovered in the vehicle, matching Trice's injuries.
Authorities used Trice's cell phone to track his route, leading them to an area near Coleman A. Young International Airport in Detroit. Tragically, Wynter's lifeless body was found in an alley.
The Suspect And His Late Daughter
The medical examiner is currently investigating the cause of Wynter's death, which appeared to involve strangulation with a pink cell phone charging cord. Trice denied taking Wynter and claimed he last saw her with her mother.
However, he admitted to arguing with Wynter's mother and engaging in a violent altercation where they both stabbed each other.
Heartbreakingly, text evidence revealed Trice's uncle pleading with him to seek help and expressing love for him. Trice responded with a disturbing message indicating his intention to end his own life.
The federal records indicate strong evidence that Trice murdered Wynter and left her in the alley where she was found.
Trice faces multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding, attempting to disarm an officer, assault with a dangerous weapon, and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
Prosecutors are deeply saddened by the devastating loss of Wynter and emphasize the heinous nature of the alleged crimes.
If convicted in federal court, Trice could face a mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison or possibly the death penalty. The punishment for kidnapping a minor ranges from 20 years to life behind bars.
The tragic news has left the community in mourning, and authorities express their heartfelt condolences to Wynter's family. The pursuit of justice continues as the investigation unfolds.
