A Newton man is facing murder charges following a fatal attack on his wife in their Newton home, a horrifying incident that unfolded while their children were present.
Richard Hanson, 64, appeared in court, where he was charged with murder, assault, and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury in connection with the death of his 54-year-old wife, Nancy Hanson.
Held without bail, Hanson's arraignment shed light on the distressing circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
Late Saturday evening, Newton police received simultaneous 911 calls from the couple's son and a friend of the victim, who was on the phone during the assault. According to prosecutors, the juvenile son reported that Richard Hanson had struck his wife with a baseball bat during the physical altercation.
The friend, who overheard the incident, described hearing the phone drop followed by disturbing sounds, with the children pleading, "Dad, stop, you're killing her!"
Upon arriving at the Brookline Street residence, police discovered Nancy Hanson in a children's bedroom, suffering from apparent blunt-force injuries. She was immediately rushed to Brigham and Women's Hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries.
Richard Hanson was found outside the house, with bloodstains on his body and clothes. Prosecutors allege that he claimed his wife had been unfaithful to him.
The Chief Medical Examiner determined Nancy Hanson's cause of death to be blunt force trauma, adding to the string of recent tragedies in Newton.
Just last month, three people were found stabbed and bludgeoned to death in their Broadway Street home. Christopher Ferguson, 41, is facing murder charges in that case.
Expressing her condolences, Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller referred to the incident as "another horrific tragedy in Newton." She emphasized the importance of seeking support from loved ones, faith leaders, and mental health professionals during these difficult times.
Meanwhile, the couple's children have been placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
Nancy Hanson's death occurred only two days after a restraining order was issued against her husband, which the police had been attempting to serve.
Richard Hanson is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on August 16. The investigation into this devastating incident continues, further highlighting the urgent need for support and vigilance within the community.
