A heartbreaking incident occurred in Florida when a 16-year-old boy, Vontraez Banner, was fatally shot while retrieving mail at his grandmother's house.
The tragic event took place on Juanita Avenue near Fort Pierce in St. Lucie County. Despite recovering the car believed to be involved in the shooting, authorities have not made any arrests yet.
Vontraez's mother confirmed that he was the victim of the shooting. The incident happened at around 1:45 p.m. in the home's driveway.
According to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara, the young boy was peacefully getting his mail when an unknown assailant drove up and fired multiple shots.
The sheriff asserted that they believe Vontraez was targeted for reasons that are yet to be determined.
The neighborhood was quickly cordoned off by the police as they conducted a search for the shooter or shooters.
On Tuesday, an update was provided, stating that the car they suspect was involved in the incident had been found.
It is described as a dark gray 2016 Chevrolet Cruze with dark tinted windows and a dent on the driver's side rear quarter panel.
The license plate number is AM99IM. Detectives are asking for any information about the vehicle's whereabouts between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday.
Vontraez was a sophomore at Fort Pierce Westwood Academy last year, according to reports from the station.
Neighbors in the area expressed their shock and sympathy for the family, as the tragedy unfolded in what is generally considered a peaceful neighborhood.
