In a tragic turn of events, the Marion police chief made a distressing announcement on Thursday afternoon.
They had discovered the lifeless body of a woman at her residence. The incident came to light when concerned family members asked the police to check on her well-being as they couldn't reach her.
The woman, identified as 27-year-old Kristin Rutherford, required constant care due to her disabilities.
Family members informed the police that she lived in the house and needed around-the-clock support.
Upon entering the home through a window, officers found her deceased in a bedroom. It's believed that her body had been there for some time.
Kristin Rutherford's older sister, 34-year-old Casie Lynne McCartha, was responsible for her care and also lived with her.
However, she wasn't present in the house when Kristin's body was discovered. Following the investigation, the police discovered that McCartha had a felony warrant against her for concealing the death of a person.
A search for her was initiated, and she was later apprehended at a Best Western in Asheville, accompanied by her three-year-old daughter.
The situation has left the community bewildered and seeking answers.
The police chief expressed their confusion and stated that many family members are seeking clarity on the events that unfolded.
Neighbors who were renovating the adjacent house recalled seeing people come and go from the residence but didn't remember Kristin being present, although she often used a wheelchair.
As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on finding the truth behind this tragic incident and providing justice for Kristin Rutherford.
