Larry Rudolph, a wealthy dentist from Pennsylvania, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for killing his wife of 34 years, Bianca Rudolph, during an African safari in 2016.
The couple was on their last morning in Zambia when Larry Rudolph shot Bianca Rudolph in the heart with a shotgun.
He then placed the gun back in its soft case to make it appear that she had accidentally shot herself while packing.
Prosecutors said that Larry Rudolph killed his wife in order to receive life insurance payments and begin a new life with his longtime mistress, Lori Milliron.
Rudolph and Milliron had been in an open relationship for more than a decade, but Larry Rudolph wanted to be with Milliron exclusively.
Rudolph's lawyers have maintained his innocence, but a jury found him guilty of murder and mail fraud.
He was also ordered to pay nearly $7 million in restitution and fines.
The case drew international attention because it involved a wealthy American who was killed in a foreign country.
It also raised questions about the ethics of life insurance companies that pay out large sums of money to beneficiaries who are later convicted of murder.
