Disturbing Details Emerge in Case of Woman, Verity Beck, Who is Accused of Killing and Dismembering Her Parents
Prosecutors won't ask for the death penalty if they can convince a juror that a woman from Pennsylvania brutally killed and dismembered her elderly parents.
"The necessary legal factors aren't here in this situation," said Samantha Cauffman, an assistant prosecutor in Montgomery County, during a hearing on Thursday, according to The Associated Press.
Verity Beck, 44, is accused by authorities of shooting her father, Reid Beck, 73, in the forehead and her mother, Miriam Beck, 72, in the back of the head.
Verity Beck - The Accused
It's alleged that she beheaded her father and left his body under a blanket, with his feet sticking out.
Authorities reported discovering "eight separate pieces" of Miriam Beck in white trash bags inside a 55-gallon trash can in the family's garage.
Investigators said that Verity's brother, who lived nearby in Jenkinstown, found the remains in their Abington home on January 17.
Officers at the crime scene
He hadn't heard from his parents for over a week and had planned to bring soup to his sister, who had complained about being sick that day.
Upon entering the house with his key, he found his father's body under a bloodstained blanket.
He called out for his sister, who came to the living room and they spoke for around 30 minutes. When he urged her to call the police, she asked for "more time."
Verity didn't clarify what happened to their father, and the man didn't ask about their mother, though he believed she was also dead.
He then called 911, and the police arrived to detect a strong smell of decay in the house.
Verity Beck allegedly said, "They are dead," when the police asked about her parents' whereabouts. It's said that she used a chainsaw in the crime.
Based on "marks" on the bedroom carpet, authorities believe part of the dismemberment occurred there.
Detectives found a pillow with powder burns and a hole, which indicated a gun being fired through the pillow. Detectives believe a revolver was the murder weapon, as no fired cartridge casings were found at the scene.
Three revolvers were discovered in the house, and two Charter Arms .38 caliber models were registered to Verity. However, a .38 caliber Smith and Wesson had no recorded ownership.
Investigators concluded that Verity Beck likely killed her parents on January 7. They based this on the last voice contact between her brother and their mother, as well as unread newspapers from that day outside the home.
There were drill marks on the wall safe in the second-floor master bedroom, indicating an attempt to break in, along with nearby tools.
Prosecutors haven't proposed a motive for the deaths.
Verity Beck pleaded not guilty on Thursday to two counts each of first- and third-degree murder, corpse abuse, and possessing instruments of crime.
She's currently being held without bail.
