Mother of Boy Who Shot His Teacher And Openly Boasted About It Has Entered A Guilty Plea For Felony Murder Charges

The mother of the 6-year-old Virginia boy who used her gun to injure his teacher, Abigail Zwerner, and bragged about it, is set to plead guilty to a felony charge related to the incident.

Deja Nicole Taylor, 26, faced charges of child neglect and reckless firearm storage.

She has reached a plea agreement in which she'll admit to the felony charge, according to her attorney, James Ellenson.

As part of the deal, the Newport News commonwealth’s attorney’s office will drop the firearm charge and propose a sentence of up to six months in jail, avoiding a jury trial.

Without the agreement, Taylor could have faced up to six years in prison for both charges.

The judge, Christopher Papile, will have the discretion to consider the prosecution's recommendation or impose a different sentence when Taylor is sentenced on October 27.

Taylor has also admitted guilt in federal court for using marijuana while owning a firearm, which violates US law, and for lying on a federal background check form during the weapon purchase.

The federal charges could lead to a combined 25-year sentence, but prosecutors are requesting 18 months to two years.

Sentencing for these charges is scheduled for October 18.

While Taylor's attorney aimed for a plea deal involving a misdemeanor charge, prosecutors insisted on the child neglect felony charge due to the boy's access to firearms, despite known behavioral issues.

The first-grader wounded his teacher, Abigail Zwerner, at Richneck Elementary School on January 6.

The boy stated that he had used his mother's gun to shoot her. Zwerner, 25, suffered severe injuries, including a collapsed lung.

She has filed a $40 million lawsuit against school officials for not addressing prior warnings about the student.

Taylor's attorney has mentioned her mental health struggles after an ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage.

He also emphasized the boy's emotional difficulties, with ongoing efforts to support his improvement.

As of now, the plea deal is pending court approval.
