An Ohio teenager was sentenced to two life sentences in prison for the murders of her boyfriend and another man in a high-speed crash.
Mackenzie Shirilla, 18, was found guilty earlier this month of two counts of murder, two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, and one count of drug possession.
She was also sentenced to 15 years to life on each of the murder charges, to be served consecutively.
The crash happened on July 31, 2022, in Strongsville, Ohio.
Shirilla was driving her car with her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, Davion Flanagan, when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a brick wall.
Russo and Flanagan were killed instantly.
Prosecutors argued that Shirilla intentionally caused the crash by speeding and driving recklessly.
They also said that she showed no remorse after the crash, and that she even asked if authorities could just suspend her license for 10 years.
The victims' families spoke at the sentencing hearing, and they described the pain and loss they have experienced.
Russo's mother said that her son was "the most selfless person" she knows, and that she "lost three children" in the crash.
Flanagan's mother said that her son was "an amazing soul with a heart of gold," and that she "will never be the same" without him.
Shirilla's attorney argued that the crash was a tragic accident, and that his client has no memory of it.
He also said that she has expressed remorse for her actions.
However, the judge said that she was not convinced that Shirilla was remorseful, and that she had shown a "shocking lack of concern" for the victims.
She said that the sentence was necessary to protect the public from Shirilla.
