Self-Proclaimed Prophet, Convicted of Wife's Murder

In a disturbing incident that unfolded on October 29, 2021, residents of Mabonde in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia county, were witnesses to an alarming act of violence.

Boniface Ekwara, a self-proclaimed prophet, was seen assaulting his wife, Esther Chemutai. Sadly, eight days later, Chemutai's lifeless body was discovered on a mattress in their home.

Ekwara was immediately arrested, and he faced charges of murder.

Although he initially denied responsibility for his wife's death, the evidence presented in court painted a chilling picture of the events leading up to the tragedy.

Ekwara's account portrayed a heated argument on that fateful evening.

He said he came back home to find his wife drunk and no meal prepared, which led to an argument. This disagreement escalated into a physical altercation witnessed by concerned neighbors.

Ekwara admitted this was the first time he had resorted to violence against her. He said that after the fight, they slept separately, and he was shocked to discover her lifeless body the next morning.

However, the postmortem examination revealed a grim truth – Chemutai died due to strangulation, with injuries indicating a fractured cricoid cartilage, a component of the airway.

Ekwara attributed her death to alcohol consumption, but the evidence pointed to a darker reality.

Witnesses recounted the harrowing scene that unfolded that night.

Neighbor Michael Khisa heard disturbing noises from Ekwara's house during the rain. When he went to investigate the noise, he stumbled upon Ekwara and a naked Chemutai engaged in a violent struggle.

Despite Khisa's pleas to stop, Ekwara continued his assault, even threatening to end her life.

Chemutai pleaded for forgiveness but her pleas fell on deaf ears.

The couple went back inside the house and Ekwara locked the door, forcing the neighbors to retreat.
As days passed, Chemutai's condition deteriorated.

Tragically, Chemutai's life came to a grisly end, and her decomposing body was eventually discovered by concerned residents.

Ekwara's arrest and subsequent conviction shed light on the horrors of domestic violence.

The court's decision, delivered on August 3, held Ekwara accountable for his actions, finding him guilty of murder under Section 322(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

This heart-wrenching case serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address domestic violence and protect vulnerable individuals from harm.
