The Lucy Letby case has left many of her colleagues struggling to accept that she is guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others.
Despite the overwhelming evidence presented in court, some of Letby's friends and colleagues refuse to believe that she is capable of such heinous crimes.
They claim that consultants were making excuses for their own mistakes and blaming Letby for the deaths.
Letby herself flatly denied the charges, claiming that she believed consultants were pinning the blame on her to cover up hospital failings.
Her defense barrister also argued that senior doctors had sought to "do down" the nurse in their evidence and that the unit on which she worked was "understaffed and overstretched" during the period when the attacks were claimed to have taken place.
However, the jury rejected these claims and found Letby guilty of 14 out of 21 charges. She was given a whole life jail sentence, meaning she will never be released from prison.
The case has raised concerns about the failings of the hospital and the need for accountability and transparency in the healthcare system.
Some of Letby's colleagues had voiced suspicions about her amid a spike in baby deaths, but they were forced to apologize after external reviews exonerated her.
To prevent similar incidents from happening again, it is important to strengthen law enforcement efforts, increase community engagement and awareness, strengthen legislation and penalties, collaborate with technology companies, support vulnerable populations, foster international cooperation, and continuously evaluate and improve crime prevention strategies.
