Two Met Police Officers Convicted in Fatal Collision Case Which Left A Woman, Shante Daniel-Folkes, Dead

Two Metropolitan Police officers have been found guilty of driving offences after an independent investigation into a fatal collision that happened in Lambeth in 2021.

Former PC Nadeem Patel and PC Gary Thomson, both from the Central South Command Unit, faced charges following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), supported by the Met.

PC Thomson, who drove the first police car, faced charges of dangerous driving but was acquitted after a trial at the Old Bailey in July.

However, he was found guilty of careless driving and received a £500 fine and five penalty points on his licence.

PC Patel, who was driving the second police car, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He pleaded guilty to the charge on 21 November 2022 and received a three-year imprisonment sentence and a three-year driving disqualification.

He was dismissed from the police force after a misconduct hearing on 4 May.

The collision occurred on Stockwell Road, SW9, on Wednesday 9 June 2021, as the two police cars were responding to an emergency call.

Tragically, a female pedestrian, Shante Daniel-Folkes, 25, from Norwood, SE27, was struck by the second car driven by PC Patel and died at the scene despite efforts from officers and paramedics.

With the conclusion of the criminal case, misconduct proceedings will take place.

Commander Seb Adjei-Addoh, responsible for policing in Lambeth, expressed condolences to Shante Daniel-Folkes' family and acknowledged the impact the incident and trial verdict have had on the local community in Lambeth.

The Police Community Engagement team will be working to address concerns arising from the incident and trial verdict in the coming days.
