In a devastating incident at a Bali resort, five young hotel workers lost their lives when a steel lift cable suddenly snapped, causing them to forcefully fall from a height of 100 meters.
These two men and three women were employed in the housekeeping department at Ayuterra Resort, situated in the Ubud district.
The tragic event unfolded on Friday afternoon at 1 pm when they boarded a glass elevator, which operates on a track with a 35-degree incline.
The unfortunate victims have been identified as Ni Luh Superningsih, 20, Kadek Hardiyanti, 24, Kadek Yanti Pradewi, 19, Sang Putu Bayu Adi Krisna, 19, and Wayan Aries Setiawan, 23.
Reports indicate that the families of the deceased received compensation of just over $4,000 from their employers. However, this compensation came with the condition that they would not pursue legal action against the resort.
According to local sources, the families received amounts ranging from IDR 158.2 million ($16,308) to IDR 166.1 million ($17,122) from the social security program BPJS Ketenagakerjaan.
Additionally, they received approximately IDR 40 million ($4,112) from the resort owners to cover cremation expenses and on compassionate grounds.
The support from Ayuterra Resort effectively dissuaded the families from taking legal action against the company.
Mr. Hardiyanti's uncle, Nyoman Suarila, expressed his acceptance of these terms, stating, "Even if we sue, our children will not return. But we believe in karma. If the company is wrong, then it will face consequences. That's our principle. If the incident that caused my nephew's death was the fault of a technician or something, it must be handled according to the law."
Tragically, two of the workers lost their lives at the scene, while the remaining three were rushed to the hospital but sadly succumbed to their injuries shortly after.
A cook employed at the hotel, Ketut Suwiarta, recounted hearing screams soon after the group entered the elevator, followed by a disturbing crashing noise. He immediately rushed outside to assist the victims and alerted the authorities.
The elevator operates along a track, providing transportation for both tourists and workers between the hotel's upper sections, situated high on the ridge, and the resort facilities at ground level.
Authorities are currently investigating the reasons behind the cable's rupture, the maintenance measures taken to ensure safety, and the absence of backup mechanisms in case of cable failure.
In the wake of this tragic incident, the families met with Bali's deputy governor, Cok Ace, while Balinese Hindu ceremonies were conducted to cleanse the site and offer blessings to the victims.
Cok Ace stated, "I was at the resort earlier; the Bali Police were there, the police chief too, as well as several witnesses who knew of the incident. Earlier, when I was being interviewed there, I saw for myself the scene where the rope had broken."
For the duration of the investigation, all guests at the resort have been relocated to alternative accommodations to ensure their safety.
