In Orange County, California, Dr. William Thompson IV, a specialist in infectious diseases catering to the LGBTQ+ community, faces charges of sexually assaulting nine male patients between 2016 and 2020, according to authorities.
Authorities allege that Thompson engaged in these assaults by falsely saying that the examinations were medically necessary, violating the trust of his patients who relied on him for critical medical care. The charges against him include eight felony counts of sexual penetration through fraudulent professional representation, three felony counts of sexual battery through fraud, and two felony counts of forcible oral copulation.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer expressed concern over Thompson's abuse of his position of trust, stating that patients should feel safe sharing their vulnerabilities with their doctor without the fear of being exploited. Spitzer emphasized that Thompson's actions were shameful and a betrayal of his oath to protect patients.
Six patients reported that Thompson assaulted them after realizing that the procedures were not medically necessary. The alleged assaults occurred between 2016 and 2020. An investigation conducted by the California Department of Consumer Affairs and the Newport Beach Police Department led to Thompson's arrest on September 20. He was released on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment on November 2 in Newport Beach.
If convicted on all counts, Thompson could face a maximum sentence of 30 years to life, with an additional 25 years. Thompson has not responded to requests for comment.
It's worth noting that Thompson had a previous arrest in April 2021 for suspicion of driving under the influence. At the time, his blood alcohol level was reported to be .38, and he pleaded guilty to related misdemeanor charges.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about Thompson's activities or potential victims to contact the Newport Beach Police Department at 949-644-3682. Anonymous tips can be provided at 1-800-550-6273.
At the time of this report, it is unclear whether Thompson has legal representation.
