A 22-year-old man has been apprehended in connection with the tragic shooting incident that claimed the life of an innocent bystander and left five others injured, including a 5-year-old child, during an Easter celebration in 2021.
The incident unfolded at a park where hundreds had gathered, and it escalated from a dispute between two groups of young men.
Jalynd Rayford (pictured above) was taken into custody on a murder warrant for the death of Areyelle Yarbrough, 32, by a U.S. Marshal's Service task force.
This arrest occurred at an apartment complex in Georgia. Currently, Rayford is being held without bail at the Gwinnett County Jail as he awaits extradition to Alabama. At the moment, it remains unclear whether he has legal representation.
The father of the victim, Michael Yarbrough, expressed relief and gratitude for the arrest, attributing the timing to divine intervention. He acknowledged that the family now has some closure and hopes that the criminal justice system will proceed to deliver justice.
Birmingham's police Chief Scott Thurmond expressed satisfaction with the arrest, highlighting that law enforcement's primary purpose is to apprehend those responsible for such tragedies and provide closure to grieving families.
He commended the relentless efforts of investigators who continue to work on solving cases, regardless of their age.
The incident occurred on April 4, 2021, when an individual in a dark-colored SUV opened fire into the crowd at Patton Park. The Birmingham police responded to multiple reports of people shot in the park just after 7 p.m.
At the scene, they discovered Areyelle Yarbrough lying on the ground outside her vehicle, where she tragically lost her life. Five other individuals, including one adult and four juveniles aged 5 to 17, sustained injuries but were in stable condition at that time.
The 5-year-old victim had suffered lung injuries and a broken collarbone but was showing resilience and signs of recovery.
The shooting incident, which involved the firing of over 30 rounds, is believed to have been a result of an escalated conflict between two groups of young men. Chief Thurmond suggested that it might have been related to a gang feud.
In another news, three men have been sentenced to prison for producing and selling fake drugs. See detailed story here
