A tragic incident unfolded in Dallas as a dedicated Arlington Police Department officer lost his life in a suspected hit-and-run collision on Thursday.
Reports and authorities confirm that Officer Darrin McMichael, a seasoned veteran with 24 years of service, was struck while en route to his duty on Interstate 20, according to information provided by his department.
Chief of Police Al Jones expressed deep sorrow and condolences, remarking that Officer Darrin McMichael was not only respected within the department but also beloved by his colleagues. He urged everyone to keep Officer McMichael's family, including his wife, who also works at APD, in their thoughts and prayers during this heart-wrenching time.
Officer McMichael had dedicated 13 years of his career to serving in the Motorcycle Unit, but tragically succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital following the incident.
The accident resulted in the closure of Interstate 20 as investigators pieced together the details.
Initial reports suggest that Officer McMichael may have collided with the vehicle in front of him, possibly due to sudden traffic slowdown.
Subsequently, he fell from his motorcycle and was fatally run over by a dark-colored Dodge or Chrysler SUV, which left the scene of the incident, according to statements from investigators.
Dallas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Doug Sisk appealed to the public for assistance, encouraging anyone with dashcam footage or information related to the incident to come forward, as identifying the fleeing vehicle was crucial to the ongoing investigation.
A snapshot captured at the accident site by KDFW revealed the motorcycle lying near the highway's center median, with debris strewn across the opposite side of the road.
Arlington Mayor Jim Ross, himself a former police officer, empathized with the pain of such a loss.
He requested that the community join in prayer for Officer McMichael's family and fellow officers who are grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event.
In a another recent development, the man convicted of the heinous rape and murder of a University of Oklahoma dance student back in 1996 faced his final moments during an execution. See detailed story here
