A suburban Detroit police department recently made an announcement, casting doubt on a woman's claim that her friend, who suffered fatal injuries while lying in the middle of a road, had voluntarily jumped from her moving vehicle.
Kentia Fearn informed investigators at the Southfield Police Department that Mia Kanu had jumped from Fearn's SUV while it was in motion, following their attendance at a summer party. Tragically, Mia Kanu, aged 23, was discovered unresponsive on June 3rd at 4:32 a.m. in front of a Southfield, Michigan, apartment complex.
After spending two days on life support at Ascension Providence Hospital, she was pronounced dead in June. Kentia Fearn now faces felony charges related to failing to stop at an accident resulting in death, which could lead to a five-year prison sentence or a $5,000 fine.
Kanu was seated in the back of her friend's 2022 silver Jeep Compass, according to police reports.
In a recent news conference attended by Kanu's family, friends, and the Southfield Police Department, the truth surrounding the veterinary student's death was revealed, dispelling the earlier account of her demise.
Police Chief Elvin Barren disclosed that video footage contradicted the claim of Kanu voluntarily exiting the moving vehicle. Instead, the footage depicted Kanu falling from the speeding car while Fearn continued to drive.
Barren expressed disbelief at the lack of concern shown by Fearn, questioning the actions of someone who wouldn't stop to check on a friend who had fallen from their vehicle.
The video shows a vehicle traveling south on Providence Drive, briefly slowing down as it approaches an apartment driveway before accelerating past the gated entrance. During this moment, a blurred image captures Kanu falling from the vehicle. Fearn, the driver, does not stop but continues driving.
Barren emphasized that there was no evidence to suggest that Mia jumped from the vehicle. Instead, it appeared she may have been in the process of vomiting due to motion and, consequently, fell from the car.
During the investigation, police found vomit on the car's door seal and in the vicinity where Kanu was found. They also discovered a Jeep key fob and Kanu's phone.
Further details emerged indicating that Fearn reported the incident from her perspective later in the day on June 3rd, around 12:25 p.m. She explained that the sequence of events leading to the accident began with a physical altercation between her and her boyfriend while they were in the Jeep. Kanu was in the back seat, asleep during the altercation.
Fearn stated that her boyfriend took her phone and left in his vehicle, and she followed to retrieve her belongings but was unsuccessful. She then used Kanu's phone to contact another friend. When Kanu woke up, she retrieved her phone. Fearn's report to the police primarily concerned her boyfriend, not her friend.
Fearn described driving to a nearby apartment complex to pick up another friend after the altercation with her boyfriend. They searched for Kanu in the vicinity but couldn't locate her. Fearn mentioned seeing an ambulance and emergency lights near where Kanu had fallen from the car but did not notify authorities about her involvement or her friend's condition.
Autopsy and toxicology reports revealed that Kanu had a blood alcohol level exceeding the legal limit at .21. It remains unclear whether Fearn was tested for drugs or alcohol.
The case remains under investigation, and no homicide charges have been filed. Both Fearn and the other person present in the vehicle at the time of Kanu's death are cooperating with the authorities.
