Justice Served: Virginia Mother Gets 78 Years for Tragic Shooting of Daughters After Sedating Them With Melatonin-Laced Gummy Bear
In Fairfax, Virginia, a mother, Veronica Youngblood, has been sentenced to 78 years in prison for a horrifying crime in which she sedated her two daughters with melatonin-laced gummy bears before fatally shooting them.
The tragic incident unfolded in August 2018 when Youngblood took the lives of her daughters, Sharon Castro, 15, and Brooklynn Youngblood, 5, in their McLean apartment. Castro managed to call 911 after being shot, revealing that her mother was responsible.
Youngblood's arrest and subsequent trial revealed a harrowing tale of a custody dispute that led to this unthinkable act. She had initially planned to end the lives of her daughters and herself. Her ex-husband, Ron Youngblood, had wanted to relocate to Missouri with both daughters, but he ultimately agreed to take custody of Brooklyn due to his ex-wife's objections.
Before the fatal shootings, Youngblood administered melatonin-laced gummy bears to her daughters as a sedative. She then shot them while they were in their beds.
During the trial, she presented an insanity defense, which was ultimately rejected by the jury. They recommended a 78-year prison sentence.
Testimonies during the sentencing phase shed light on Youngblood's troubled upbringing in Argentina, marked by poverty, childhood abuse, and involvement in sex work as a teenager to support her older daughter.
At her sentencing, Youngblood spoke for over 30 minutes about her daughters and the challenges she faced in raising them. She expressed confusion about the tragic turn of events. Defense lawyers had sought concurrent murder sentences, which would have resulted in a shorter sentence of 42 years, but the judge upheld the jury's recommendation, stating that he had no legal authority to increase it.
Prosecutor Kelsey Gill emphasized the premeditated nature of the killings, pointing out that Youngblood had purchased the murder weapon a week before the incident. She described the depth of depravity in Youngblood's planning and execution of the horrific act.
Youngblood's public defender, Dawn Butorac, indicated that an appeal is expected.
Ron Youngblood, who was Brooklynn's father and played a significant role in Sharon's upbringing, expressed his pain and disbelief over the tragedy. He stated that he had no inkling that his ex-wife could commit such a heinous act against their daughters.
Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano acknowledged the gravity of the tragedy, emphasizing that while nothing can bring the children back, the sentencing represents a measure of justice for their grieving family.
In another development, a teenage girl found herself in the hospital after a violent brawl at Victor Valley High School in San Bernardino County, California, on Friday night, during a football game. The altercation involved a sheriff's deputy and led to traumatic injuries for the 16-year-old girl named Faith Jeffers. See detailed story here
