Miami-Dade Incident: 3-Year-Old Accidentally Shoots Herself with Unattended Firearm

In southwest Miami-Dade, a distressing incident unfolded when a 3-year-old relative named Serenity found a firearm and accidentally shot herself while under the care of Orlando Young, a 23-year-old family member.

This unfortunate event led to Young's arrest and subsequent charges of child neglect with bodily harm, as revealed in court documents.

The incident took place on Sunday, September 24, at a residence on SW 220th Terrace, where Young was residing with family members. He had been entrusted with the care of the young girl, who was visiting her paternal grandmother's house.

Young prepared breakfast for the child and watched over her throughout the day.

During the course of the day, Young, engrossed in watching a football game, momentarily left his gun unattended on the couch due to his excitement over a touchdown, according to his arrest report. It was during this brief lapse in supervision that the toddler discovered the firearm and, tragically, shot herself.

The entire incident was captured on surveillance video.

Young, upon hearing a "loud bang" and noticing blood from the girl's hand, immediately realized what had occurred. The injured toddler was swiftly transported to Homestead Hospital and subsequently transferred to Nicklaus Children's Hospital for surgery to address the injury to her hand.

When questioned by the police, the young girl disclosed that she had found the gun on the couch and had been playing with it. She went on to explain that, while engaged in this unintended play, she accidentally discharged the firearm, resulting in the injury to her right hand.

Serenity's mother, Warnicia Williams, is understandably demanding accountability in the wake of this tragic incident.

She shared her emotions, expressing anger, sadness, and hurt, while reflecting on how close she came to losing her daughter. Williams emphasized that the gun had been aimed at her daughter's chest and that her hand had, miraculously, saved her life.

Following medical treatment, Serenity has been released from the hospital and is reportedly in good spirits.

Meanwhile in Idaho, a 32-year-old woman named Jessica Lynn Weeks was apprehended last week following a disturbing discovery by the police.

The authorities found the skeletal remains of her newborn daughter crammed inside a carry-on suitcase, concealed within a backyard doghouse where it had been hidden for months. See detailed story here
