Miami Teacher Fatally Shot in Apparent Murder-Suicide

In Miami, Florida, a distressing incident unfolded as police reported a gunman who fatally shot a local school teacher and left another man severely injured before turning the weapon on himself.

Although the authorities did not disclose the names of the suspect and survivor, the victim tragically identified is Maria Cruz de la Cruz (pictured above), aged 51.

She held the role of teaching algebra, geometry, and Spanish at the Doral Academy K – 8 charter school.

Both Cruz and the injured man were in critical condition, but regrettably, she lost her life at Jackson Medical Center.

Miami-Dade police Detective Angel Rodriguez provided a statement to Law&Crime, explaining the incident, "This past Friday at approximately 4:20 p.m., Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) responded to reports of a shooting at the 9900 block SW 165 Terrace. Upon arrival, they discovered an adult male with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

They also discovered another adult male and an adult female, both having sustained gunshot wound(s). Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded, determined the adult male with the self-inflicted gunshot wound was deceased, and transported the other two injured to Jackson South Medical Center in critical condition.

Despite medical efforts, the female victim succumbed to her injuries a short time later. There was another adult female on the scene who was not injured, and the firearm was recovered."

Doral Academy Principal Eleonora Cuesta expressed profound sorrow in a statement to WTVJ, saying, "It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the loss of our cherished Ms. Maria Cruz. Her compassion, commitment, and love for her students have left an indelible mark on us all. In these difficult times, our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with her daughters."

Cuesta pledged the school's dedication to providing additional on-site counselors to support the students as they navigate the grief of Cruz's untimely passing. She concluded, "May the memory of our beloved Maria Cruz be a blessing."

According to Rodriguez, law enforcement is not actively seeking any "subject" as this case is classified as a murder-suicide.

The motive behind the shooting remains undisclosed, and detectives are currently exploring the possibility of any previous history of domestic violence.

A neighbor recounted hearing the gunshots from his residence, prompting him to rush outside to investigate and subsequently call 911.
