Rookie Teacher of the Year Dies While Saving Friend in Domestic Dispute




In a tragic incident, a Texan woman hailed as Rookie Teacher of the Year in 2022 lost her life, along with her faithful dog, while bravely intervening in a domestic dispute to save her friend.

Houston's Police Chief Ed Gonzalez shared on social media that Shantavia Reddick, aged 26, had rushed to her friend's residence one Saturday morning to mediate in an ongoing domestic conflict. Reddick, accompanied by her dog, approached her friend when she was fatally shot multiple times by her friend's boyfriend, Dimitri Humphrey. Tragically, Humphrey also shot and killed her loyal dog. 

Gonzalez praised Reddick's heroism, stating that she sacrificed her life to save her friend.


Fortunately, the girlfriend remained unharmed, but Humphrey remains at large. He fled the scene in a white Jeep Wrangler bearing Texas license plate TFN-4278, as per Gonzalez's information.

Shantavia Reddick's untimely demise has sent shockwaves through her students and colleagues. She was a dedicated third-grade teacher at Smith Elementary School, a part of the Spring Independent School District in Houston. 

Reddick had been honored as Rookie Teacher of the Year by the district for her outstanding contributions during the 2021-22 school year.

The Spring Independent School District expressed deep sorrow over her passing, describing her as a cherished team member and acknowledging the profound loss in public education. They extended their condolences to her family during this challenging period.


Reddick had graduated from Prairie View A&M in 2020, holding a degree in interdisciplinary studies, according to Houston's CBS affiliate KHOU. Her tragic loss at the young age of 26 has left a significant impact on the community.

Chief Gonzalez emphasized that this incident underscores the potential dangers of domestic violence situations. He encouraged people to seek assistance from others in such circumstances, highlighting the heartbreaking nature of this particular tragedy.
