A 19-year-old Texan man got arrested this week for allegedly killing an 18-year-old woman during a burst of anger. The incident occurred while she was playfully tugging on his ear while assisting him in moving to a new apartment, and a 1-year-old toddler she was babysitting was present.
Jamaurea Jermaine Britton was taken into custody on Tuesday, facing charges of murder and making terroristic threats against a family or household member, according to records reviewed by Law&Crime.
Hood's body was discovered behind a building at the Hollytree Apartment complex in Tyler, Texas, after she had been reported missing. Investigators reported that she was last seen with Britton.
During an interview with investigators, Britton initially provided a false account of the incident before eventually confessing to Hood's killing.
When police arrived at his apartment, they noticed the word "LOSER" spray-painted on the entryway wall, with a closer look revealing a red substance resembling saturated blood amid the paint marks. Britton claimed it was from his dog's medical issue.
Britton explained that he had asked Hood to help him pack as he prepared to move out of the Hollytree Apartments. He picked her up from her home, where she had been babysitting a 1-year-old. However, Britton's anger escalated when Hood playfully tugged on his ear, reminiscent of his ex-girlfriend's actions.
In a fit of rage, he picked up a glass bottle of wine and struck Hood on the back of her head. She fell, and he punched her in the face. Britton admitted to strangling her and even used a hammer to strike her repeatedly until the handle broke.
Britton believed he had killed Hood and tried to commit suicide twice, once with a knife pointed at his chest and another time with a recently purchased gun, but a neighbor interrupted him. Afterward, he drove the 1-year-old to Hood's mother's home.
Upon his return, he found Hood still alive and stabbed her multiple times. He then wrapped her body in plastic wrap and sheets and disposed of it in a nearby ravine.
Britton is currently held in Smith County Jail with bond set at over $1 million.
