Uber Driver's Family Files Negligence Lawsuit Against Uber After Their Family Member, Christina Spicuzza's Died While Working

More than a year after a horrifying incident in which an Uber driver was shot while on duty, the victim's mother is taking legal action against the ride-hailing giant. 

In a tragic turn of events, Christina "Christi" Spicuzza, aged 38, lost her life on either February 10 or 11, 2022. 

Calvin Anthony Crew, aged 24, is accused of her murder, leaving her lifeless and wearing a "COVID face mask" in a wooded area in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.

The chilling story began when the suspect, Calvin Crew, called his girlfriend, Tanaya Mullen, and asked her to request an Uber ride using her Apple Pay account. The ride commenced at 9:11 p.m. on February 10, 2022, but it wasn't until noon on February 12, 2022, that Spicuzza's lifeless body was discovered.

Text messages exchanged between Calvin Crew and Tanaya Mullen on February 10 and 11, 2022, provide eerie insights into the events leading up to the tragedy. Mullen expressed concern for Crew's actions, and Crew mentioned the need for money, using slang terms like "dub" and "gas."

The nightmare unfolded during the ride when Spicuzza, unaware of the danger, encountered Calvin Crew, who was wearing a mask. Dashcam footage from inside the Uber captured the terrifying moments when Crew brandished a gun, held it to Spicuzza's head, and demanded she continue driving. 

Spicuzza, a mother of four, pleaded for her life, but Crew remained unrelenting. He eventually controlled her by grabbing her ponytail.

Calvin Crew was apprehended several days later, but the trauma left behind was immeasurable. Now, Cindy Spicuzza, acting as the administratrix of her daughter's estate, is pursuing a wrongful death lawsuit against Uber, alleging negligence on the company's part.

The lawsuit contends that Uber's negligence directly contributed to Christina Spicuzza's tragic death. It suggests that if Uber had implemented stricter background checks for passengers, used its data analysis capabilities to identify potentially dangerous riders, or provided basic safety features in Uber-approved rental cars, this tragedy might have been prevented.

The lawsuit seeks a jury trial, and while Calvin Crew has yet to face a criminal trial, the legal process is underway.

Uber, in response, emphasized its commitment to driver safety, highlighting various safety features introduced over the years. The company acknowledges the pain suffered by the victim's family and continues to invest in safety measures to protect its drivers.
