Violent Ambush on American-Mexican Travelers in Northern Mexico Leave Many Injured

In northern Mexico, a distressing event unfolded when a group of Mexican and American citizens traveling in vehicles fell victim to an assault by armed civilians.

The incident took place on the Roma Bridge in the city of Miguel Aleman, situated in the Mexican border state of Tamaulipas. Local authorities reported at least three Mexican passengers sustained injuries in the attack.

According to the Mexican National Migration Institute (INM), the assault occurred during the early morning hours. The group, consisting of 20 individuals, comprised 16 Mexican nationals and four Americans who were traveling in two trucks.

Remarkably, the caravan had embarked on its journey from the United States.

INM condemned the attack and provided details about the wounded. Among the Mexican citizens, a woman suffered two gunshot wounds to her back, a 62-year-old man sustained a leg injury, and a 70-year-old man had his finger struck by a bullet.

The American contingent, comprising three individuals from Dallas and one from Atlanta, consisted of two adults aged 23 and 21, along with two minors—a 14-year-old and a 19-month-old. Thankfully, none of the American citizens sustained injuries, as confirmed by INM.

A U.S. government official, speaking to Reuters, disclosed that at approximately 5:30 on Saturday morning, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials at the Roma Port of Entry processed seven individuals who had come under fire during the caravan's journey.

This group included American citizens, lawful U.S. permanent residents, and a Mexican citizen. Mexican ambulances transported them to local hospitals for treatment.

Tamaulipas security authorities, in a communication on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), revealed that six individuals were treated for "nervous breakdowns" in addition to the three individuals injured by firearms.

It's important to note that Tamaulipas is considered one of the most violence-prone states in Mexico, primarily due to the presence of criminal organizations engaged in activities such as migrant smuggling, drug trafficking, and various illicit endeavors.

This incident adds to a series of security concerns in the region, including a previous kidnapping of four Americans in March, which resulted in casualties and strained relations between the two neighboring nations.
