In Alaska, a man who confessed to fatally stabbing a sex worker during an intimate encounter and then attempting to move her body to his car before his girlfriend returned home has been sentenced to spend at least fifty years in prison. Simon Weyiouanna, 33, entered a guilty plea in March for second-degree murder in connection with the 2018 killing of Cheri Ingram, 42. The state reached a plea agreement with Weyiouanna, resulting in a 75-year sentence with 25 years suspended and 50 years to serve, as per a news release from prosecutors.
During the sentencing hearing, Ingram's cousin, Courtenay Carty, expressed the family's pain, stating, "All of our families have been caught in this cycle." She added, "How unfortunate it was for this man to think he had some sort of power within him — which we all know as evil — to think he had the right to take a life."
Ingram was tragically killed on February 28, 2018, after Weyiouanna gave her a ride to his residence. An intimate encounter between them turned violent, leading to multiple stabbings by Weyiouanna. Following the attack, he wrapped her body in a bedsheet and attempted to move it outside, presumably to his vehicle.
A 911 call reported an individual, later identified as Weyiouanna, struggling with what appeared to be a human leg beneath a stack of sheets near an apartment building. The caller's husband and son held Weyiouwanna at gunpoint until the police arrived.
When law enforcement arrived, they discovered Weyiouwanna's vehicle idling on the walkway, with the hatchback open and the body wrapped in sheets on the ground. Weyiouanna had blood on his clothing, a cut on his finger, and a bloody knife in his pocket, according to The Anchorage Daily News, citing an affidavit.
Weyiouanna confessed to police that he had picked up a sex worker at a nearby gas station, brought her home, engaged in sexual activity, and then stabbed her multiple times. He claimed that he was attempting to move Ingram's body before his girlfriend returned home.
During Weyiouanna's sentencing, Ingram's son, Mark Lopez, emotionally spoke about the profound impact of his mother's death on the family. He shared that one of his younger brothers had died from a heroin overdose in 2021 and expressed remorse for not having a different relationship with his mother while she was alive. He forgave Weyiouanna and prayed for mercy for his soul.
Weyiouanna's defense attorney declined to provide a comment.
