A 23-year-old man in Florida was taken into custody by the police for the alleged killing of a security guard at a senior living community in Brooksville.
On Thursday night, around 10:15 p.m., the Hernando County Sheriff's Office received a call regarding a situation at the entrance of the High Point community in Brooksville, initially reported as a medical emergency.
Fire Rescue personnel arrived quickly and, upon further assessment, discovered it was a criminal incident. Deputies arrived at the scene shortly after.
The victim was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Detectives, with the help of witness statements and video footage, identified Jeremy Jason Patterson as a person of interest and later as a suspect.
Patterson was apprehended in a nearby wooded area on Friday night and is currently facing a murder charge, as indicated by records.
Although the sheriff's office hasn't disclosed the victim's name, a report by Tampa NBC affiliate WFLA identified him as 81-year-old Ed Mead, who had been working as a security guard for the residential community.
Arlene Dyer, a resident of the community, expressed her grief and confusion, mentioning that she had seen someone matching the suspect's description in the community on Friday morning.
However, she lost track of the individual after a 911 dispatcher advised against following him. She also shared her sense of devastation due to the tragic incident, stating that it has hindered her ability to go about daily tasks, like preparing her house for sale.
Dave Bittle, another community member, visited the guard shack to pay his respects to Mead. He described Mead as a genuinely good person and expressed disbelief that such a tragic event could occur.
In another news, a man from Michigan, Robert Wayne Lee, known for exposing alleged child predators online to his thousands of social media followers, tragically lost his life when he confronted two teenagers late Friday night. See detailed story here
