Atlanta Police Officer, Kiran Kimbrough Fired After Church Deacon, Johnny Hollman, Sr. is Tasered During a Confrontation

Johnny Hollman, Sr. was on his way home from a Bible study, carrying fried chicken and an apple pie to share with his wife for dinner. As he navigated a sharp turn, his white Chevrolet Silverado collided with another vehicle on a late Thursday night in August, according to a police report obtained by PEOPLE.

Hours after the accident, the authorities identified Hollman as the "at-fault driver."

Allegedly uncooperative, he was handcuffed, tasered, and lost consciousness, leading to his subsequent death at an Atlanta hospital. The arresting officer, Kiran Kimbrough, a Black man, has now been terminated by the Atlanta Police Department, a move announced just yesterday.

This incident remains an active investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, with potential criminal charges looming over Kimbrough in the coming months.

In a press release, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum emphasized the importance of every individual in the city, stressing his duty to ensure the protection and service of the city's citizens. He assured that the decision to terminate Kimbrough followed a thorough review of the facts while respecting due process.

Kimbrough's termination is said to result from a failure to follow the department's standard operating procedures, but as of early Wednesday afternoon, it wasn't officially confirmed. The Atlanta Police Department had not yet notified the Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training Council about Kimbrough's termination.

On the night of August 10, when police officers arrived at the scene, Kimbrough attempted to issue a traffic citation. However, the driver's agitation led to a struggle. After subduing the driver, Kimbrough realized he was unresponsive and called for medical assistance. A medical examiner later declared Hollman's death as a homicide, with heart disease as a contributing factor.

Officer Shaquana Almonds, present during the altercation, impounded Hollman's truck and found a gun in the console, which was later claimed by his grandson. In the backseat, a black backpack contained marijuana, an unknown substance, a pocket knife, and a scale to measure drugs.

Kimbrough had become a "peace officer" in October 2021 with a clean disciplinary history.

The Atlanta Police Department's announcement of Kimbrough's termination comes as body-camera footage of the incident is set to be released in the near future. The department urged against releasing the footage until the investigation is complete.

Arnitra Hollman, the daughter of Johnny Hollman, expressed the family's determination to seek justice for their father.
