A man from Baltimore, Maryland, has been charged in connection with the tragic shooting that took the life of a Howard County deputy on Friday.
The Baltimore Police Department announced the arrest of 40-year-old Jewel Crowder on the same day. He now faces a first-degree murder charge for allegedly shooting and fatally injuring Deputy Ryan Alexander Demby, 23 years old.
According to a Facebook post by the Howard County Sheriff's Office, the incident unfolded when Demby was at a Baltimore bar in the early hours of Friday. A verbal argument among other patrons escalated, resulting in gunshots being fired, and Demby was struck.
City Councilman Eric Costello revealed in a press release that the dispute began inside the bar and continued outside its front door. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Demby suffering from multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Demby was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was ultimately pronounced dead. Acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley disclosed that the entire incident had been captured on camera. The Associated Press reported that the footage, combined with witness testimonies, led to the swift identification of Crowder as a suspect.
During a news conference, Howard County Sheriff Marcus Harris described Demby as an "outstanding young man" who followed in his father's footsteps.
His father serves as a sergeant with the department. According to a social media post from the Howard County Sheriff's Office, Demby had recently graduated from the police academy in March, and photographs showed his father also working as a Sheriff's Deputy.
Meanwhile, New York authorities are currently on the lookout for a missing 9-year-old girl who may have been taken from Moreau Lake State Park on a Saturday evening. See detailed story here
