In a troubling turn of events, a 24-year-old counselor has admitted to engaging in a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old male client under her care, following the discovery of incriminating evidence on her phone.
Payton Shires, aged 24, has confessed to involvement in unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
Investigations conducted in Columbus, Ohio, United States, uncovered disturbing footage of the inappropriate relationship with the minor.
The chain of events was set in motion when a concerned parent reported their suspicions in September, prompting swift action from law enforcement authorities.
On September 27, the boy's mother, who remains unnamed, reached out to the Columbus Police. She inquired whether her son had "deleted the videos" or if anyone else had seen them. In response, officers arranged a three-way telephone call, involving themselves, the concerned mother, and Payton Shires.
It was during this three-way conversation that the counselor allegedly confessed to her involvement in the sexual relationship with the 13-year-old.
Following this admission, Payton Shires was taken into custody, and law enforcement authorities subsequently released her mugshot along with details of her counseling license.
Records indicate that Shires obtained her counseling license from the National Youth Advocate Programme on June 12 earlier this year. A spokesperson for the company has issued a statement acknowledging their awareness of the case, as reported by ABC6.
In their statement, they expressed, "Protecting children is a shared responsibility. The National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) is deeply saddened by the situation involving one of our former employees and a young person who was under our care."
The NYAP primarily supports families within the foster care system. Although they indicated awareness of Shires' alleged actions, they did not specify when the 24-year-old ceased working for their organization.
Presently, Shires is held at the Franklin County Corrections Center. She made bail, which was set by Judge Mike Mcallister at more than £400,000 ($500,000), and appeared in court on Friday, October 6.
