In a recent incident at a high school in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, the school went into lockdown mode on Friday afternoon after a surprising discovery. It all started when a substitute teacher unintentionally left their backpack behind in a classroom as the third-period students were leaving, as reported by Fox 5 DC.
A vigilant staff member in that classroom decided to take a look inside the backpack to identify its owner shortly after 2 p.m. To their astonishment, they found a handgun inside. Immediately, the school authorities implemented a lockdown, keeping students confined to their classrooms and barring anyone from entering the hallways.
The firearm was swiftly handed over to the police, and it was determined that the gun belonged to the substitute teacher, who was at that time teaching in another classroom.
The police promptly apprehended the substitute teacher. Following this incident, the substitute teacher is now prohibited from working in any role, including as a substitute teacher, within Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
The school principal, Kevin Carr, emphasized that there is currently no evidence to suggest that any student had possession of the backpack on that day. Additionally, there is no information to indicate that the handgun was ever taken out of the backpack.
Carr also commended the students for their excellent response to the situation, noting that they remained calm, orderly, and followed the instructions of the staff.
