In Ohio, a mother and her daughter have been indicted for serious charges, including murder, after the police discovered a newborn baby in the car trunk, wrapped in a trash bag and placed inside a five-gallon bucket.
The two individuals, Basma Abdul Alkelezli, 36, and her daughter Hanan Ahmad Al Jabouli, 19, face a range of charges, such as strangulation or suffocation, endangering children, tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse, and obstructing justice in connection with the death of Alkelezli's newborn son at their home near Columbus.
The Chief of the Hilliard Division of Police, Mike Woods, recounted that paramedics responded to a call at the residence on the morning of September 20, reporting a medical emergency involving Alkelezli. She was subsequently taken to a hospital.
During the 911 call, a distressed caller mentioned, "My mom is not waking up. I don't know what's going on with her."
It was only after arriving at the hospital that authorities realized Alkelezli had recently given birth. They returned to the home in search of the infant. After an unsuccessful search inside the residence, the police turned their attention to a vehicle parked in the backyard.
There, they made the grim discovery of the newborn. Officers immediately initiated CPR and rushed the infant to a children's hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead.
According to court documents cited by WSYX, Alkelezli placed the newborn in a trash bag and instructed Al Jabouli to dispose of the child. Al Jabouli then placed the infant in an orange five-gallon bucket in the car trunk.
Chief Woods acknowledged the emotional toll this incident had on his officers, many of whom are parents themselves.
He expressed his pride in their ability to handle the situation, saying, "All of the officers that are here, most of them are parents, a couple of them here have newborn children. It's very tough on them. I'm proud of them for pushing through it."
A neighbour who witnessed the incident described the distressing scene, noting the large police response and the efforts of first responders to provide medical assistance to the child.
Alkelezli and Al Jabouli were initially arrested on September 22 on abuse of a corpse charges before their subsequent indictment.
