A father from North Carolina is now facing serious charges following allegations that he shook his newborn son to death while visiting the hospital. Here's what we know about the incident:
Noah Benjamin Bliss, a 22-year-old from Angier, was arrested on October 13 and is now charged with first-degree murder and intentional child abuse causing serious bodily injury, as revealed in court records.
Bliss is accused of attacking and causing the tragic death of his 3-week-old son, Gunner Bliss, on October 6 at the WakeMed Health and Hospitals campus in Raleigh.
According to an arrest warrant on the murder charge, on that day, Bliss is accused of unlawfully and willfully causing the death of his son, Gunner.
While details about the incident are scarce in court documents, the newborn's mother, Savannah Bliss, shared her anguish about her son's shocking death.
Savannah gave birth to twins, Gunner and Madelyn, prematurely at 34 weeks on September 15. On the fateful day of the incident, Savannah was with Madelyn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, while Noah was looking after Gunner and their 1-year-old child in a room at WakeMed's Heart Center Inn on the hospital's top floor. The family was staying there while the baby received neonatal care.
During her absence, Gunner suffered a brain bleed and swelling from head trauma. Hospital staff informed Savannah that there were no external injuries or broken bones, but the baby was deprived of oxygen due to the head trauma. Nurses suggested that the injuries indicate he was shaken by his father.
Tragically, on Monday, Gunner was taken off life support, leaving Savannah heartbroken. She trusted her husband to look after their son while she cared for Gunner's sister in the ICU, and the loss of her baby boy has left her devastated.
Noah is currently held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court in November. His public defender has not provided a comment.
