Tennessee Mayor Charged with Domestic Assault in Yard Work Dispute

Landon Mathis, the mayor of Burns, Tennessee, who once earned praise for saving his predecessor's life with CPR during a heart attack, is now facing charges of domestic assault after allegedly body-slamming his girlfriend's son during a heated dispute over $40 owed for yard work.

Mathis, aged 45, was initially arrested by the Dickson County Sheriff's Office on September 24 following reports of a domestic disturbance at a Tennessee residence, as reported by the local NBC affiliate WSMV.

According to details from an arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, the unnamed boy involved in the altercation explained to the arriving law enforcement officers that the dispute began when he asked Mathis to pay him for yard work, specifically weed-eating the yard.

He stated that Mathis had agreed to pay him $40 for the job.

However, once the work was completed, Mathis allegedly refused to pay, and the situation escalated. The victim recounted that Mathis lunged at him while he was discussing the matter with his mother, who is Mathis' girlfriend.

Mathis, who is 5'11" and weighs 250 pounds, allegedly grabbed the boy by the shirt collar, pushed him onto a couch, and left marks on the right side of his neck. When the boy tried to break free, Mathis reportedly stepped on his feet, leading to a physical confrontation. Mathis allegedly body-slammed the boy and applied pressure to his nose, causing pain.

The victim's mother attempted to intervene but was unsuccessful. The age of the victim was not provided by the police.

There is no information available regarding whether Mathis has legal representation, and Law&Crime was unable to reach him for comment.

In a previous incident, Mathis had gained recognition for saving the life of Jeff Bishop, the former mayor of Burns, after Bishop suffered a severe heart attack in August 2016.

Both men had backgrounds in professional flooring work before entering local politics, and they were working on a flooring job together when Bishop experienced the heart attack. Mathis performed CPR on Bishop, ultimately helping to save his life.
