A 24-year-old woman now faces charges related to a tragic shooting that occurred in June, claiming the lives of three individuals and causing panic in an Indianapolis entertainment district, as per authorities.
Kara Hinds, arrested on Thursday, is facing two murder charges, one reckless homicide charge, two battery charges, and a criminal recklessness charge. As of now, there's no attorney listed for her in online court records. An initial hearing for her case is scheduled for October 10.
The incident unfolded in the Broad Ripple entertainment district during the early hours of June 25, characterized by tensions between different groups of people that escalated into a physical altercation. Multiple shots were fired from various firearms, according to Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears during a news conference on Thursday.
Mears stated, "There was a lot of drinking going on, and you cannot ignore the fact that there were way too many people who were armed."
The shooting resulted in the tragic deaths of two men, 24-year-old Tywain Henning and 22-year-old Christopher Lee Wilson Jr., as well as a 22-year-old woman, Kaleyia Preer. Another person was injured by gunfire but survived.
According to a probable cause affidavit, a witness, who identified Hinds as the shooter, claimed that someone had punched Hinds from behind just before she turned and started firing shots. The witness mentioned that Wilson and Henning were armed, but it remained unclear whether anyone in the group confronting Hinds had also fired shots due to the chaotic nature of the situation, as reported by The Indianapolis Star.
Forensic testing connected firearm evidence collected from the shooting scene to Hinds' Glock pistol, as noted in the affidavit. In a late September interview with investigators, Hinds stated that she "felt like she was defending herself."
