A Woman In a Wheel Chair Was Attacked and Strangled with Pool Noodle by Elderly Man, Carl Edward Chastang
In Ohio, a 77-year-old man was arrested after an alleged assault on a woman in a wheelchair, which involved throwing her to the ground, kicking her in the ribs, and using a pool noodle to strangle her.
Carl Edward Chastang was taken into custody and charged with felonious assault resulting in serious harm to the victim, as per court records reviewed by Law&Crime.
Columbus Police Department officers responded to an incident at Mount Carmel East Hospital on October 28, where an adult female was reported as the victim of a possible domestic violence episode, as reported by Columbus, Ohio NBC affiliate WCMH. The victim revealed that Chastang had assaulted her, although the exact nature of their relationship remained unclear.
Further details emerged from a criminal complaint obtained by the station. Allegedly, the victim accidentally ran over Chastang's foot while in her wheelchair at a home in Franklin County's Eastland neighborhood.
This seemingly minor incident led Chastang to flip the wheelchair, causing the victim to fall to the ground. Subsequently, he reportedly proceeded to physically attack her, using punches and kicks before utilizing a pool noodle to strangle her.
Despite the victim's calls for help, Chastang allegedly ignored her pleas, leaving her incapacitated until someone else eventually sought medical assistance the following day. Medical examination at Mount Carmel East revealed that the victim had suffered three broken ribs as a result of the assault.
During police questioning, the victim claimed that Chastang had threatened her if she disclosed his involvement in her injuries. Chastang is currently detained at the Franklin County Correction Center on Jackson Pike, with a $25,000 bond.
Conditions of his release mandate that he stay away from the victim and the location of the incident, and refrain from any further acts of violence. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 9.
The Columbus Police Department did not respond immediately to Law&Crime's request for additional information regarding the case.
