A 33-year-old man from Long Island, New York, faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of killing his 29-year-old pregnant girlfriend three months before her expected due date.
Goey Charles, convicted on one count of second-degree murder, was accused of strangling Vanessa Pierre and abandoning her lifeless body on the side of the highway three years ago.
Following the jury's verdict in Queens County, District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed, "We achieved justice for Vanessa [Pierre]. The verdict does not bring her back, but it holds her killer accountable." The prosecution plans to request a lengthy prison sentence for Charles due to the brutality and callousness displayed in the murder of his girlfriend and the mother-to-be.
Video surveillance footage played a crucial role in Charles's conviction. Around 2:50 a.m. on October 23, 2020, the footage captured Charles driving a white Dodge Challenger and stopping on the Horace Harding Expressway.
The car, registered in Pierre's name, saw Charles moving to the back seat where the pregnant Pierre was initially observed seated and moving. Subsequently, the footage showed Charles allegedly dragging Pierre's lifeless body out of the car at approximately 4:38 a.m. before driving away.
An MTA bus driver discovered Pierre's body and a pair of gray sweatpants around her neck at 6 a.m. Charles, confirmed as the father of Pierre's unborn child, is scheduled to appear in Queens Supreme Court on November 29. He faces a potential sentence of 25 years to life in a state correctional facility.
