A Florida guy ended up in handcuffs after he allegedly swiped a company car for a joyride following a couple of shots of Fireball, as reported by the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Lee Rushing found himself facing a DUI charge after the incident unfolded in Summerfield on a Monday. Summerfield sits around 11 miles northwest of The Villages.
A fellow worker from the same excavating company suspected Rushing of driving under the influence when he saw him drive off in a company vehicle. It was this co-worker who alerted the authorities, according to the arrest affidavit.
A deputy pulled Rushing over and immediately noticed his watery eyes and the strong smell of alcohol on him. The co-worker who had reported Rushing was also present at the scene on the 2400 block of 145th Street, tailing him. The co-worker mentioned that Rushing's speech was odd and he seemed intoxicated, as per the affidavit.
Although Rushing denied drinking alcohol, he allowed the deputy to search the vehicle. During the search, the deputy found two empty pints of McCormick vodka and an empty 100 mL bottle of Fireball, according to the arrest affidavit.
Despite having knee injuries that could hinder him, Rushing agreed to perform field sobriety tests. However, the deputy determined that Rushing was indeed impaired and unfit to operate a vehicle safely, leading to his arrest and transportation to the Marion County Jail.
At the jail, Rushing consented to a breathalyzer test, which produced results about twice the legal limit. In a post-Miranda interview, he admitted to consuming two "shooters" of Fireball earlier that day.
Rushing has since been released after posting a $1,000 bond.
