In a heart-wrenching twist of fate, a Florida man made a frantic 911 call after discovering his father had allegedly shot and killed his brother. The incident unfolded on November 3rd when David Contreras, 52, reportedly shot his son Eric Contreras, 21, multiple times at their Kendall, Florida home.
According to police reports, the elder Contreras called 911 himself, admitting to the shooting and expressing his emotional distress. His son, also named David Contreras, received a series of disturbing calls from his parents while en route to Disney World.
"I don't know, I think something happened to my brother, my dad's calling and he's freaking out," the younger Contreras told the 911 dispatcher, his voice laced with panic.
When the younger Contreras arrived home, he found his brother Eric unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. Eric was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
David Contreras' attorneys painted a picture of a distraught father grappling with the aftermath of his son's death. "This is just a very tragic situation. He is distraught," Frank Quintero Jr., one of Contreras' attorneys, stated to NBC Miami.
Quintero Jr. also hinted at Eric Contreras' mental health history, suggesting it may have played a role in the tragic incident. "The victim is the son of the defendant, and the victim has suffered from some severe emotional and mental conditions, and we're still trying to determine what happened, why it happened," he explained.
As of now, a clear motive for the shooting remains elusive, and Miami-Dade police continue their investigation.
Meanwhile, Eric Contreras' fraternity at Florida International University paid tribute to their fallen brother, remembering him as a man who embodied their values of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love.
"Eric was a committed SigEp who will always be remembered for being a caring man and for lighting up any room he was in," the FIU chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon stated in a heartfelt Instagram post.
On Monday, Contreras' attorney entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf. He is currently being held without bond, but his attorneys are hopeful that Judge Daryl Trawick will grant bond at his next court hearing, scheduled for January 4, 2024.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence and the importance of mental health awareness.
