Former yoga instructor Kaitlin Armstrong has been convicted of the murder of professional cyclist Anna Moriah “Mo” Wilson, who was previously romantically involved with Armstrong’s on-again, off-again boyfriend.
The highly awaited trial kicked off on Nov. 1 in Austin, Texas—the same city where Wilson was tragically shot at her friend's residence on May 11, 2022. After just under two hours of deliberation, the jury found Armstrong, 35, guilty of first-degree murder.
In the hours leading up to Wilson's demise, she embarked on an extended bike ride, joined fellow professional cyclist Colin Strickland (her former flame) for swimming, dinner, and drinks, and was dropped off at her friend's house by Strickland. Approximately an hour later, Wilson was discovered fatally shot inside the residence.
Throughout the trial, prosecutors alleged that Armstrong—involved in an on-again, off-again relationship with Strickland—utilized a fitness app to track Wilson's location in Austin. They also claimed Armstrong monitored Wilson's movements on social media in the days preceding the murder. Wilson and Strickland had dated in 2021 during Armstrong and Strickland's separation, but Strickland maintained a friendship with Wilson, allegedly sparking Armstrong's ire.
Armstrong was initially questioned by authorities a day after Wilson's murder, as reported by KXAN, but was mistakenly released from custody. On May 14, she flew from Austin to New York City and subsequently vanished. After over a month on the lam, Armstrong was apprehended in Costa Rica on June 29, having used a fraudulent passport to flee the country on May 18. Upon her return to the U.S., she was charged with murder and pleaded not guilty.
During the trial, Armstrong's friend Nicole Mertz testified that when Wilson visited Austin in late October 2021, Armstrong expressed visible anger when Wilson arrived at a local restaurant where friends of Armstrong and Strickland had gathered. Mertz quoted Armstrong as saying, "I would kill her," when asked what she would do if Strickland started dating someone seriously.
Armstrong awaits sentencing and could face life imprisonment.
