Georgia Inmate Charged in 'Racially Motivated Murder' for Allegedly Beating Cellmate to Death, Police Say.

Jaquez Jackson faces charges of murder, malice murder, aggravated assault, and inciting a penal riot as stated by the Clayton County Sheriff's Office, alleging he brutally beat his cellmate in what authorities deem a "racially motivated murder" at the Georgia jail.

In a press release, the Sheriff's Office reported that Jackson, a Black inmate, allegedly carried out the killing solely based on the victim's skin color, emphasizing his aversion to Mexican/Hispanic individuals during the investigation.

The victim remains unidentified, and Jackson, who had been in jail on a probation violation involving charges such as simple battery, assault, criminal trespass, battery, and terroristic threats, faces serious charges including murder and malice murder.

As of now, it's unclear if Jackson has entered a plea or secured legal representation. Jackson had previously received a five-year sentence on April 20, 2022, with 12 months in jail and four months on probation. However, on Oct. 11, 2023, his probation was revoked.

Sheriff Levon Allen expressed the commitment of both himself and the board of commissioners to enhance the jail's conditions, with over $5 million in emergency funds already approved. The sheriff is now seeking an additional $6.5 million in funding to expand the jail's capacity and ensure proper inmate classification, addressing the current overcapacity issue with around 1,900 inmates, surpassing the jail's capacity by 365 individuals.

The Clayton County Medical Examiner’s office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are actively involved in assisting with the ongoing investigation.
