In Cincinnati, a tragic drive-by shooting unfolded on Friday, claiming the life of an 11-year-old boy and injuring five others. The incident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. in the West End neighborhood, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge revealed that when officers arrived at the scene, they discovered six victims of the shooting. Tragically, the 11-year-old boy, identified as Dominic Davis by his family on a verified GoFundMe campaign, lost his life at the scene.
Among the wounded were four children aged between 12 and 15, along with a 53-year-old woman, who were transported to local hospitals for medical care. One of the injured victims is reported to be in stable condition.
Chief Theetge disclosed that the gunman unleashed a hail of 22 rounds from a dark sedan, sparking an outcry from the community and law enforcement.
Dominic's father, Issac Davis, expressed his anguish during a press conference, questioning when such senseless violence would cease. He appealed for anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the urgency of finding those responsible for this tragedy.
Mayor Aftab Pureval decried the shooting as a "sickening and unacceptable tragedy" and highlighted its occurrence in a vibrant neighborhood, adjacent to a local park and a historic elementary school. He noted the fear gripping residents, forcing them to communicate messages of love and support through open windows.
Pureval further underscored the grim reality of the situation, with 22 rounds fired into a group of children, leaving no time to react. The trauma experienced by these young individuals is something they will have to grapple with for the rest of their lives.
Cincinnati City Manager Sheryl Long, who herself has experienced the loss of a family member due to gun violence, vowed to work tirelessly with law enforcement and community partners to bring the culprits to justice.
Chief Theetge called upon the public to assist in identifying any suspects, issuing a stern warning to those responsible for this violent act to turn themselves in. She emphasized that the investigation was still in its early stages, making it too soon to determine whether the shooting was a random act of violence or a targeted incident.
